"Are you ready for this Sydney?!"
"All the tried and noted riders from the stations near and far"...
No, no, not them, that's a bunch of blokes on horseback in the Snowy Mountains. I'm talking about another bunch of 'guys' on skates (sans horses) who recently descended on the All Phones Arena for the first ever, International Ice Hockey game played in Sydney between arch rivals Canada and the USA.
Unbelievable, NHL standard ice hockey right here in Oz, in Syn'y! And they brought with them 'technology' that's not too common around these parts - sticks, pucks, pads and helmets, to do battle on Aussie ice. Canada started strong and racked up a bunch of goals before acknowledging the under strength USA team, and let them slap through a couple of their own.
There's a limit to all that Canadian tolerance, so following a traditional 'fight' in the second quarter (3 fights actually) the Canucks decided to bring the hammer down to finish the game with a Canada 9 USA 6 score line, with Canada retaining the Douglas Webber Cup.
What a fantastic night with a sea of red and white dominating the 21,000 record crowd. I must admit, I missed the basic 'beer and a dog' combo of Canadian arenas but at least there was a 'beer and a queue'!
'Hockey Night in Australia'! Oh yeah, we're definitely ready for this.
